ZEROGLAB IS (formerly known as 'Dark&Light Research Lab' (1992-1996) an independent
art institute in Rotterdam / Berlin / Budapest / EU. The institute in an evolving
process of exchange with initiatives of individuals and institutions,
based on mutual sympathy. Many activities of the lab are non-textual,
even non-visual. To have a 1:1 impression, we advise you to get involved
with zeroglab. At this very moment zeroglab is active in Rotterdam/EU.
We do not (intend to) make "art pieces" for the art industry.
If it sometimes looks like art, it is then a coincidental byproduct
of something else. A post-war pre-peace point in a loop, or on some
strange curved fragmented timeline.
POLICIES:
To
develop new ideas, it takes a lot of energy, money, time and happiness.
If you intend to use our ideas, we except you to give us compensation
for our effort. The main business of zeroglab is to sell knowledge and
visions.

excerpts from my notes for
the lecture:
Net+work
(...) In 1985Martin Sjardijn,
an artist from The Hague publishes his text about a new kind of
art. such as:
"A LINE IN OUTER SPACE
VISIBLE FROM EARTH
WITH THE NAKED EYE
AT CLEAR NIGHTS"
This statement was sent by fax to press-agencies worldwide in 1985.
Christo, the Bulgarian artist was the first one who gave his reaction
in a letter. (letter of Christo)
(...) In 1989 I meet Sjardijn in The Hague. He reveals
me a little secret:
"THE EARTH IS DONE"
He also shows me his "Weightless sculpture", and I read
an article in the Belgian Andere Sinema magazine of Sjardijn and
an article called "Eat Death" from Maurice Nio a dutch
arcitect of NOX in Rotterdam. My brain goes spacerocket without
taking any drugs.
(...) In 1989, the whole artistic vocabulary I left with,
the remnants of modernism were actually in the way to move on with
art or anything. Art for arts' sake had become such a strong dogma,
that it would take a life time to fight your way through, and yet
to be defeated at then end. In music, even silence was seized by
a giant, like Cage. The development of the visual arts looked like
slow motion, you waded in the thick syrup of art history. The arena
was overcrowded with dead ideas of dead artists. The cadavers of
the victorious giants were lying around wherever I stepped. It was
such a minefield. The practice of the artist profession had become
an empty ritual of summing up the leftover and name the names of
the smell of this decay. Culture was reduced to worshiping the Heroes
of Destruction. The Big Ones of the Avant-garde. It just did not
feel right to follow into their footsteps. Also, it seemed inappropriate
to sink yet another dagger in the back of a Dead Hero.
For a brief moment at the beginning of the 90's it became possible
to sneak along and past the event horizon. You just had to take
a deep breath and jump over the trench which escaped the attention
of the negligent philosophers. No mirror anymore, no history, no
inertia, no gravity, just endarkment. And if you did not like it,
you could push three buttons: Ctrl+Alt+Delete on the keyboard and
The Phantom Of Liberty rebooted again.
(...)
and in 1989 Nintendo begins selling the Game Boy
and the notion of the Avantgarde (=incl. Postmodern i.m.h.o.) dies
silently.
It does it so humbly that it becomes obvius just in 1996,
when Alan Sokal
publishes his famous hoax in the leading postmodern cultural studies
journal, the 'Social Text'.
titled: "Transgressing the Boundaries: Towards a Transformative
Hermeneutics of Quantum Gravity". It becomes a milestone, widely
known as the Sokal Affair.
It is the last and the fiercest battle in the so called "Science Wars"
between 'postmoderns' and 'realists'.

Hungarian Avant-Garde... there is no such thing. It is leaving Hungary
since the 1920's and only comes back to die in Hungary, or, not
even that.
This is an engeniously precise text of László
Vidovszky, a Hungarian composer, who is today teaching
electronic music at the university of Pécs, HU (European
Cultural Capital in 2010) . With all respect for my friends and
collegues in Hungary, I can not add much to this. From my personal
and sometimes painful experience with what is the Hungarian art
scene today I only could draw the very same conclusion which was
already drawn 28 years ago by Vidovszky. The so called Hungarian
avant-garde: (people who loudly call themself "avangard"
(how silly, how stupid)) did not provide any solution, perspective,
did not have any constructive input, from which the people of Hungary
could have benefited. It is reactional, in the true sense of this
word. Re-acting and not creating. Striking and not working, destroying
and not building. They covered themselfs and the eyes of many with
a smoke curtain of elitistic myth. They do not have key for any
solution because they are part of the problem. They had become the
snowman, the gate keepers of closely controlled
doors, instead of being gates themselfs with no doors. This is why
the world around them also could not notice such thing as "avant-garde"
in Hungary. There is no such thing in Hungary.
László Vidovszky (composer/musician, Pécs, HU)
about the Hungarian avant-grade (1979)

ANSWER
TO THE LETTER OF THE HUNGARIAN AVANTGARDE MUSEUM
András Bán
Budapest, I. Attila street 35
1013
This is my reply to the circulated letter of the Hungarian Avante-garde
Museum:
There is no such thing as Hungarian avant-garde. Assumably, there
has never been. Those artistic achievements which are known as "avant-garde"
by the public, are lacking any characteristic of the avant-garde.
I sum up some of those: the avant-grade is primarily a movement,
and not creation, (as a counterpart of conservatism, production,
which has lost its drive). Almost necessarily efemer and temporary.
It is not related to an artistic personality, but to an artistic
situation; it is alienated from any aesthetic consideration (alienated
from any consideration), measure; does not seek nexus with other
contemporary or past achievements, it is self-legitimizing. On the
opposite, the domestic progressive art constantly relies on extern
or intern impulses and always occasional.
It can appear avant-garde for just one single reason: because of
the very absence of avant-garde, artists who dare to take their
responsibility, feel obligation to tackle the retrograde tendencies
(because real conservatism is absent either). A struggle, which
is fought by the avant-garde in countries with more organic culture.
But this has nothing to do with artistic issues. So, at the best,
we could talk about ethical avant-garde, if this term had any sense
at all.
About
artpool: ARTPOOL is an independent art
research institute in Budapest. The institute archives and actively
promotes a huge spectrum of contemporary hungarian and international
art, sound poetry,
experimental music,
performance art,
conceptual art,
mail art,
fluxus,
neoism,
just to name a few from the colorfull patchwork of art activities
of the hungarian art scene since the 60's. ARTPOOL is and has been
the only place where researchers and the public can aquire knowledge
about independent artistic activities of the communist era.
Links to communist secret service documents about György
Galántai, who is the co-founder of Artpool, together
with Júlia
Klaniczay.
ARTPOOL is an irreplacable brain prothesis of a whole nation in
order to preserve a significant part of the hungarian cultural heritage,
which, otherwise would have been lost forever. The C3 institute has published
an extesive record of declassified communist secret service dossiers
of artistic activities in Hungary from the 60's up to the 80's.
The reports of the informants and secret agents are stunning. They
document the a mental lobotomy of a whole nation for decades.
ARTPOOL is a huge vault of memory of a whole era and P60, the gallery
space shows recent artistic tendencies of the 20st and 21st century.

ZEROGLAB's
machinima work ERØTICA was shown
at VIPER festival
in Basel, Switzerland.
25TH VIPER | GRAND OPENING
Thursday, 16 March 2006 | Kunsthalle Basel | 8:00 P.M.
ERØTICA sequence
ERØTICA
(machinima movie)is a real time 3d environment,
using the virtools game engine, showing a short black&white low
resolution video loop of a person's head who is having s3xual pleasure.
The environment generates light particles in real time, which burns
traces of light on the face of the person. The bouncing of the light
particles is controlling the speed of the movie loop. It goes sometimes
pretty wild, sometimes it stops for seconds, creating an ever changing
pace as the light caressing and fondling the face. The combination
of the sound of the bouncing particles and the background sound
creates an uncanny ambiance.
VIPER
is forum for innovation and creativity - as one the leading internationally
renowned festivals dedicated to supporting and mediating qualitatively
outstanding and innovative works and projects VIPER presents for
five days recent productions from all over the world: interactive
fillms and installations, video essays, net art projects, VJ-events
and performances.

ZEROGLAB NANOFESTIVAL
is a parasite, portable, adoptable, resizable, open source, international
film festival for extreme short (max 10 sec.!) web movies. Nanofestival
as an event is also establishing a new model for cultural engineering.
Not only the individual works that are open source, but the whole festival
can be 'picked, taken and presented' for free, and by anyone on a single
cd-rom.
It is licenced by a Creative
Common Licence.
There are three editions so far. The titles: automat, hole,
erotica.
the erotica edition is not yet on the web for technical reasons, but
it is distributed on cd/dvd, and it is screened.
It
has been shown on many events on many continents. In the Americas, in
Rosario/Argentina, MOMA/New York City, Columbia, Mexico, probably Canada,
and god knows where. In Europe, Rotterdam, Amsterdam, Berlin Short Film
Festival, Budapest, 1st. VJ Festival, Stralsund G-Niale Film Festival
as a special program, in Hungary, at the Small Performance Festival,
many screenings in Italy. There are rumours about screenings from Austral-Asia,
we are planning to enter the film business in East-Africa via Zanzibar,
West-Africa via Dakar. Due to the special character of the festival,
it is almost impossible to track every single screening. We have given
away about 40 copies of the material for people from all around the
world. If you want a copy of the festival on a CD-ROM, write to us.
It is free.

The
Erotic Pink Wig Berlin Rage
by
ZEROGLAB (2004)
1.
Raging through Berlin, willing to fuck. Fucking the free will of the
free fuckin' born fuckin' men and women. Raging through Berlin. From
vodka rush to hangover and again. High of yourself.
Loveless.
In bed alone with a surrogate vibrator. Phillips Shave, blades off,
bites in the flesh, but eases the soul. Raging through Berlin, hunting
down the rest of your happiness for this week.
2.
Hidden from the swarms of after-party kinky girls with beer bottle in
hand, also raging in Berlin. Pissing voodoo patterns on the wheels of
a mobile home at the Warschauer straße at four thirty in the morning.
Going Down with Eastern-European cheap beer post-punk art students to
Deep City Kreuzberg Gay Bar.
Exchanging
glances with the hairy little Turkish transvestite, looking for his
ball pen. Looking he is.
Beam
me up, Lonely. Get me to your heaven with seventy-seven amber virgins.
Strangers, in the Crimson Night of Sin City. Tiny strung cross section
of manhood on a fever square meter. Smell of bull sperm in the restroom.
Love game swish.
3.
Raging through Berlin. Visiting nests of women and men. New friends
in this new city of mine. They admit you into the peculiar intim haze
of their bodies and thoughts. Writing SMS koans to the shining Dutch
Hyper-fem Feminist Jewish Girl. Husky Gray Eyes, smooth, warm, soft
slimy pussy. Ruby Sweet Delight. Getting hard, sweaty, stunned.
4.
Nails Scratch Skin. The body talks the Talk, walks the Walk. On the
U-Bahn, in the Penny Market. Catching twinkles. Smelling the lukewarm
clouds of women passing by. Cozy small talk. Where is the end stone
of your free born ego and where opens the cage of your gender?
5.
Reading. Opprobrious feminist texts pouring into your face. Dripping
drops of blame for thousands of years of Rape, Domestic Mayhem, Incest,
Faceless Silent Inertia. Politics of Love. Exorcist class struggle.
You can sense the jarring groin background noise of being badly hurt.
Asking, begging, insisting redemption. Glass of beer in the hand of
the brave women of Berlin.
The
body talks on the vistas of the Liberated City. Twinkles, you fetch.
The odor of the poovy trace of the Other. Cozy small talk.
