1. Römerberg-Spargeln:
The original timber-framed houses were all destroyed in the 2nd World
War, and renovated after the originals in the 1980’s. In 1998 the
seat of the European Central Bank moved to Frankfurt, confirming the city’s
earllier role as Europe’s financial metropolis. In relation to this
challenge between old and new, my question is: how does the city architecture
today handle the past?
2. Tooth to Tooth:
In the night from the 13th to the 14th February, 1945, Anglo-American
squadrons flew several raids over the city of Dresden. Almost the entire
inner city, including the Frauenkirche, was destroyed. After the German
reoccupation of the city, the largest post-war renovation project was
undertaken. A mountain of rubble more than 20,000 cu.m in volume was removed.
These stones were incorporated into probably the largest puzzle in the
world.
In my opinion it is a shame that these ruins now no longer exist as a
monument. Following these thoughts I have proposed an alternative reconstruction.
