shopping is one of the most highly mediated
experiences for citizens of modern industrial societies. the structures and architectures of mass communication within the shopping environment leaves little up to choice, although this very experience is designed to give the impression of unlimited choice. the shopping experience is littered with automatic responses, and automated response systems, grids and arrays of challenge-response codes, layered into complex associations. the soundtrack is built primarily of samples of "Muzak" taken directly from a shopping installation.
